No glass slippers for Disney’s new Cinderella. The famous shoe has been given a glitzy makeover for 2015 and is now a far fancier crystal slipper, thank you very much.
“I spent time in the V and A in the glass department looking at different kinds of glass whether it’s like a vase or goblet or chandelier and then realised that what it had to do was to refract and reflect the light therefore crystal seemed to be the obvious way to go with that,” says costume designer Sandy Powell – who also unsurprisingly describes the film as “a costume designer’s dream.” She had access to a whopping 1.7 million Swarovski crystals to embellish the film’s magical gowns.
The pop-up exhibition in Leicester Square Gardens boasts 22 of these costumes, as well as hundreds of props. As for the famous slippers – which are too delicate for Lily James (of Downton Abbey fame) to actually wear in the movie, and are replicated by computer graphics – I got to try them on (albeit it in equally digitized form) and I have the pictures to prove it!
Cinderella hits the big screen on 27 March in the UK, but if you just can’t wait another week, head on down and experience some behind-the-scenes magic at the #CinderellaExhibition from 21 March to 10 April.
